Towns go to court to fight Oneida Nation's gaming agreement

Two towns in New York are challenging a gaming agreement between Oneida Nation and Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D).

The towns say Cuomo exceeded his authority by promising a zone of exclusivity for the tribe. In exchange, the tribe agreed not to oppose an expansion of non-Indian gaming.

“It is essentially a quid pro quo in order to silence opposition from the Oneidas who in the past voiced opposition to the proposed constitutional amendment to legalize gambling,” attorney Cornelius Murray said in a press release, The Utica Observer-Dispatch reported.

The lawsuit was filed in state court. A hearing is scheduled for September 13.

The Cayuga Nation is also challenging the deal in federal court.
