Mohegan Tribe to sign agreement for Massachusetts casino

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut will sign a host agreement on Thursday for a commercial casino in western Massachusetts.

The host agreement is part of the process for a commercial casino bid. Voters in the town of Palmer will need to give their approval in order for the tribe to move forward.

The tribe plans the $1 billion Mohegan Sun Palmer in the town of Palmer. The project faces competition from Hard Rock International, which is owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Hard Rock has already signed a host agreement. A referendum in West Springfield is set for September 10.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is expected to issue a license for the western region casino in early 2014.
