North Carolina lawmakers oppose Catawba Nation gaming plan

More than 100 state lawmakers in North Carolina wrote to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell in opposition to a possible Catawba Nation casino.

The Catawbas are based in South Carolina but have been considering a casino across the state border. The letter asks Jewell to inform lawmakers if the tribe files a land-into-trust application.

"Gambling is a matter the federal government leaves within the purview of the states," the letter states, The Charlotte News & Observer reported. "Within the State of North Carolina, we have carefully balanced the interests of our state citizens and the rights of the tribes."

The tribe hasn't officially announced plans for a North Carolina casino.
