Menominee Nation's off-reservation casino gains more support

The Menominee Nation of Wisconsin is lining up more support for its off-reservation casino.

Nearly every state lawmaker in the area supports the casino in Kenosha. Most local officials also support the $800 million project, citing the jobs it will create.

“Tribal leaders have given me a firm commitment that they will meet or exceed the goal of having at least 15 percent of the casino workers be Racine County residents,” Jim Ladwig, the county's executive, said at a press conference on Thursday, The Kenosha News reported.

The tribe promises 1,400 construction jobs and more than 3,300 permanent jobs. About 500 of those would go to county residents.

Despite strong local support, the casino faces a high hurdle because Gov. Scott Walker (R) says all 11 tribes in the state must come to a consensus. The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe and the Ho-Chunk Nation oppose the project.
