Tribes eye vote on bill to block Tohono O'odham Nation casino

Rival tribes will be pushing for a vote on H.R.1410, a bill that prevents the Tohono O'odham Nation from opening an off-reservation casino, Rep. Ed Pastor (D-Arizona) said.

The House Natural Resources Committee voted 35-5 in July to advance the bill to the House floor. Pastor said a vote could come this fall.

“I think it was a big move, when they moved 300 miles from the reservation,” Pastor told The Daily News-Sun of the proposed casino.

Despite Pastor's claim, the site of the proposed West Valley Resort is only about 75 miles from the reservation border. It's also about 64 miles from the San Lucy District, a tribal community that's part of the reservation.

The site, however, is close to the reservations of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Gila River Indian Community. Both tribes operate casinos in the area and oppose the Tohono O'odham project.
