The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut has cleared the initial phase of its application for a commercial casino in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission deemed the tribe and its partner, Brigade Capital Management, "suitable" for business. The agency conducted background check and reviewed the finances for the project. "It's a big step in the process. It clears the way for us to continue on," Mitchell Etess, the CEO of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, told MassLive. "We know we have a great project." The tribe plans to spend $1 billion on the Mohegan Sun Palmer. A referendum in Palmer has been scheduled for November 5. If voters approve, the tribe will compete with MGM Resorts International for the casino in the western part of the state.
