Mohegan Tribe looks to stay in running for Massachusetts casino

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut started pushing for a casino in Massachusetts long before the state opened the doors to Vegas-style gambling.

The tribe opened an office in the town of Palmer, secured options to land and gained the support of local officials. But the tribe was dealt a surprise on Tuesday -- voters rejected the $1 billion Mohegan Sun Palmer by just 93 votes.

In hopes of staying in the game, the tribe is asking for a town-wide recount. Petitions were initiated on Wednesday.

"Mohegan Sun and the Yes for Palmer Committee are concerned with possible irregularities in the balloting process that were observed on Election Day by poll watchers and voters," the tribe said in a statement. "We have great respect for the process and strong level of voter engagement on both sides of this issue, and believe this action is appropriate to ensure an accurate count of all ballots."

If the vote stands, MGM Resorts International will be the only one in the running for the western Massachusetts casino. Voters in Springfield already approved the company's $800 million project.

The final decision on the license rests with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. MGM has to survive a background check before the license is awarded.
