BIA to hold hearings on Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe casino bid

The Bureau of Indian Affairs will hold two public hearings to discuss the casino proposed by the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts.

In a notice that's being published in the Federal Register tomorrow, the BIA announces the availability of a draft environmental impact statement for the tribe's land-into-trust application. The application covers a 151-acre site for the $500 million First Light Resort and Casino plus a 170-acre site at the tribe's headquarters.

To discuss the EIS, the BIA will hold a hearing on December 2 in Mashpee, the tribe's headquarters, and another one on December 3 in Taunton. That's where the casino would be located.

Written comments will be accepted within 45 days of the publication of tomorrow's notice.
