North Carolina attorney general opposes Catawba Nation casino

North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper (D) opposes the Catawba Nation gaming project.

Cooper says the casino won't stimulate the economy. "I think it's a bad idea for our state," he told The Charlotte News & Observer.

The tribe wants to build a $600 million casino resort on 16 acres in Cleveland County. A land-into-trust application has been submitted to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The tribe's primary base is in South Carolina. A land claim settlement enacted by Congress includes Cleveland County in the tribe's service area.
