The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin said it will look for alternate funding sources for its off-reservation casino after tribal members voted down a referendum on Wednesday.

In 2012, tribal members agreed to pursue the $132 million casino in Shullsburg. But by a close vote of 138-140 yesterday, they halted funding for the project.

"The Tribal Council will continue to work with the Shullsburg Work Group to seek alternative funding sources for the application process," the tribe said after the votes were counted.

The tribe has reached agreements with the city of Shullsburg, about 300 miles from tribal headquarters. The Bureau of Indian Affairs has yet to release a draft environmental impact statement for the project.
