The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut is still in the running for a commercial casino in New York.

The tribe will submit an application for a $600 million project in the Catskills, a region about 90 miles north of New York City. The deadline to file is June 30.

"The siting board and gaming commission have to pick what's right for the state of New York overall," Mitchell Grossinger Etess, the chief executive of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, told The Wall Street Journal. "Our goal will be to convince them that what's best for everybody is Sullivan County."

The Catskills region is expected to be awarded two licenses. But competition from a developer who wants to open a casino at a site even closer to New York City has already shaken up the race.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut and the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians from Wisconsin dropped out of the running due to the threat.
