The town of Wakefield, Michigan, is holding a public meeting tomorrow to discuss an off-reservation casino for the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians.

Town supervisor John Cox supports the project at the Indianhead Mountain Ski Resort. He believes it will create jobs and revenue for the region.

"They plan that they’ve got for the hotel and convention center coupled with a casino would be unique to the ski industry, especially in the Midwest," Cox told WXPR. "As a township supervisor, we want any economic development that we can get."

The tribe plans to purchase part of the resort and start the land-into-trust process for the casino portion. Approval from the state governor would presumably be required under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The tribe already operates the Lac Vieux Desert Resort and Casino. The resort is about 46 miles away.
