The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut won't be opening a second commercial casino in Pennsylvania.

The tribe was part of a group that bid on a license in the Philadelphia area. But the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board awarded it to the operators of an existing commercial casino in neighboring Maryland.

“We’re very confident we’re going to grow the market,” David Cordish, the chairman of Cordish Companies, the group behind the $425 million Live! Hotel and Casino Philadelphia and the Maryland Live! Casino. “We’re right off I-95 and I-76, so you can expand your reach and pull from two neighboring states and the region.”

The Mohegans operate the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, a commercial casino in the northeastern part of the state. The tribe owns 100 percent of the facility.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation was part of a group that originally held the license for the Philadelphia casino. But it was revoked after numerous delays.

The Mohegans and the Pequots have been looking outside of Connecticut to expand their gaming options as revenues at their reservation casinos continue to fall.
