The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has selected an architecture firm to help redevelop land near its casino in downtown Palm Springs, California.

The tribe closed the hotel at the Spa Resort Casino in July. The building is currently being demolished and JCJ Architecture -- a firm known for big gaming hotel projects -- will serve as the master planner for a 22-acre site that is anchored by an ancient hot spring.

"JCJ clearly demonstrated their overwhelming desire to work with us on creating a master plan for this site," Chairman Jeff L. Grubbe said in a press release. "Creating a master plan will include a dynamic approach that will center around the Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring and defining a renewed area around it, transforming the site into a dynamic destination."

Details are still being worked out so the tribe hasn't announced what it will do with the land. The press release, however, cited JCJ's work at tribal and non-tribal casinos in California, Arizona, Connecticut and New York.

Separately, the tribe is moving forward with plans to develop a different section of its reservation. The 577-acre parcel, known as Section 24, sits next to the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa in Rancho Mirage.

A public meeting will be held December 17 to discuss the draft environmental impact statement.
