Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) said he wants to take his time to make the right decision on the Menominee Nation off-reservation casino.

In August 2013, the Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the $800 million casino in Kenosha under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The law gives Walker a year to concur or reject the project.

But Walker is seeking a six-month extension. He told reporters that he commissioned an economic analysis in order to get an independent review of the project.

“There’s been a lot of banter since August about who is right and who is wrong,” Walker said, The Racine Journal Times reported. “We’d like to have an objective source, free from any political decision, to give us insight on how fast to proceed with this.”

If the BIA agrees to the extension, Walker will have until spring 2015 to make a decision. The tribe supports the extension.
