The Snoqualmie Tribe of Washington filed suit to recover $1.5 million that was invested in a casino project on the island nation of Fiji.

The tribe is suing developer Larry Claunch and his associates in Washington state court. The suit claims he promised to repay the $1.5 million, plus interest, by February 2012.

“We have been trying for months to recover the $1.5 million without having to file suit,” said chairwoman Carolyn Lubenau told Indian Country Today. “But no one responded to the tribe’s demand. The note is past due and must be repaid in full.”

The tribe pulled out of the deal when the project was slow to start. Developer One Hundred Sands finally started construction in April.
