The Bear River Band and Caltrans reached a settlement over an electronic billboard that promotes the tribe's casino.

The tribe agreed to pay a fine for erecting the sign on a right-of-way without first obtaining a permit, The Eureka Times-Standard reported. The tribe also will replant vegetation that was cleared away when the billboard was erected in October 2014.

The amount of the fine was not reported. But the paper said the tribe could have been forced to pay $10,000 per tree and $1,000 per shrub.

“It could have been a lot of money if we were interested in pursuing charges,” a spokesperson for Caltrans told the paper “Obviously, we were really happy to reach an agreement with them.”

The billboard is located along U.S. Highway 101, near the Bear River Casino Hotel in Loleta.
