The Yurok Tribe of California was swindled out of $250,000 by a convicted felon, The North Coast Journal reports.

A Georgia man named Charles “Duke” Sheehan promised $8 million to finance the Redwood Hotel Casino, according to a letter seen by the paper. As part of the deal, the tribe wired $250,000 into an escrow account but Sheehan apparently took the money and ran.

Sheehan didn't get very far though. He was indicted on securities fraud charges, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for another crime.

The tribe is hoping to bring Sheehan to justice for taking the $250,000. A local prosecutor said he's talked with federal officials about the incident.

The scam didn't stop the tribe from opening the $15 million casino. The facility celebrated its one-year anniversary on July 22.
