The Washoe Tribe and the Poarch Band of Creek Indians broke ground last week on a unique casino project.

The casino is located on Washoe land in Gardnerville, Nevada. The Poarch Creeks are building and managing the facility and will pay rent and taxes to the Washoes.

"We hope it’s a catalyst for things to come,” Arthur Mothershed, a Poarch Creek council member who works on economic development projects for the tribe, told The Gardnerville Record-Courier. “We hope it will become a more attractive place for people to stop.”

The casino is going next to the Wa She Shu Travel Plaza that's already under construction at the site. It's due to open a year from now.

The travel plaza itself, which features a convenience store and a gas station, will open a bit earlier, in March 2016.
