The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts saw a strong turnout for its first casino job and vendor fair on Saturday.

The tribe plans to hire more than 2,600 people to work at the First Light Resort and Casino. Construction of the $1 billion facility will support another 1,000 jobs.

"This is exciting,” one job-seeker told The Providence Journal. “I think it would be a better-paying job than what we’re getting now.”

The first phase of the facility is due to open in the summer of 2017. If that schedule holds, the tribe will be the first with a full-scale resort in Massachusetts.

MGM Resorts International broke ground on a $950 million commercial facility in Springfield, in the western part of the state, last year. But it's not due to open until the fall of 2018.

The Plainridge Park Casino offers slot machines but it's not a full-fledged gaming facility. It's located in Plainville, less than 20 miles from the tribe's site.
