A bus carrying passengers to the casino owned by the Kickapoo Tribe of Texas was involved in a fatal accident on Saturday.

Eight people were killed and 44 were injured when the bus crashed north of Laredo. The passengers were on their way to the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino but the facility did not charter the vehicle, attorney Robert Rodriguez told The Laredo Morning Times.

Rodriguez added that he was trying to determine whether the casino had any relationships with OGA Charters, the operator of the bus in question, or other bus companies. Any connections could lead to litigation against the tribe, something that happened when the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma was held liable for an accident that also occurred in Texas.

At least one lawsuit has already been filed against OGA Charters, The Laredo Morning Times reported. The driver of the bus is an employee of the company.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.
