The Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation is still interested in developing a casino in Thompson, Manitoba.

The band owns the Mystery Lake Hotel and the site was finally declared an urban reserve after a process that took more than 10 years, The Thompson Citizen reported. Although the property can't be used for gaming right now due to local restrictions, Chief Marcel Moody remains hopeful.

“There’s a moratorium on building a casino on our property, but working with the City of Thompson, maybe we can still build a casino here in Thompson somewhere," Moody told the paper.

The band is holding a general assembly on June 8 to discuss plans for the new reserve. A land vote is expected to be held soon.

"It is very important that everyone come out and vote so we can bring this important initiative to fruition," Moody wrote in the band's April 2016 newsletter.

According to 500 Nations, Manitoba is home to six Native casinos.
