Calif. tribes go online with Digital Village

With the help of a three-year $5 million grant from Hewlett Packard, tribes in southern California created the Tribal Digital Village.
Based in San Diego County, home to 18 reservations, the village provides Internet and technology services to about 15,000 Native Americans. Tribal members have access to high-speed DSL connections. In rural areas, a wireless network gets tribes online.
Tribal leaders say the project helps develop economic opportunities on their reservations.
As one example, the Southern California Tribal Chairman's Association started its first-for profit business, Hi-Rez Digital Solutions, to provide printing services.
