BIA decision on Nipmuc recognition expected May 1
Wednesday, April 14, 2004

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is expected to issue a final determination on the federal status of the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts, The Boston Herald reports.

The tribe was given a negative proposed finding by former assistant secretary Neal McCaleb. He rescinded a positive decision made in the final days of the Clinton administration. At that time, a rival group of Nipmucs was denied status, a decision McCaleb upheld.

Another rival group may be forming, according to The Herald. A man claiming control of a small Nipmuc reservation says he and his supporters have withdrawn from the Nipmuc Nation petition.

Massachusetts has one federally-recognized tribe.
