Montana proposes rules for Yellowstone bison hunt
Tuesday, June 8, 2004

The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks on Monday released a draft environmental assessment to allow hunting of bison that wander out of Yellowstone National Park.

The proposal would allow up to 25 bison permit to be issued. It was authorized by a controversial bill that was opposed by the state's Indian lawmakers last year.

Montana already has authority to haze and kill bison that wander out of park boundaries. The state fears the animals will transmit brucellosis, a deadly disease, to cattle.
