Study: Pregnant Native women have higher HIV rates

A three-year study of pregnant Native women in Vancouver, British Columbia, shows that they are seven times more likely to be HIV-positive than pregnant non-Native women.
The high rate was attributed to higher rates of intravenous drug use and higher incidents of sexual abuse among Native women. The study was conducted by Health Canada.
The All Nations Hope AIDS Network says all pregnant Native women should be tested for HIV. Nationally, half of the Native HIV/AIDS cases are women, compared to 20 percent for non-Natives.
