Makah Nation celebrates with Russian Natives
Wednesday, October 27, 2004
A celebration on the Makah Reservation in Washington brought together two distinct but related cultures.
The Makah Nation welcomed a group of Natives from Chukotka, Russia. The Makahs thanked the Russians for sharing a portion of their whale hunting quota that allowed the Makahs to resume a long-held tradition.
Ergyron, a dance troupe from Chukotka, performed traditional and modern dances at the celebration. Arnie Hunter, a Makah whale hunter, performed a traditional dance.
