Campbell plans to impose trust fund settlement
Monday, November 15, 2004

Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colorado) said he will meet this week with other lawmakers to seek a Congressional settlement of the Cobell v. Norton trust fund lawsuit.

"I don't support the idea of Congress imposing a settlement, but if we don't get something moving, they will do it," the retiring senator told The Denver Rocky Mountain News.

The Cobell plaintiffs and the Bush administration have been meeting over the past year to discuss a settlement. But nothing has happened.

Campbell said Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) will probably be the new chair of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. "He will start busting heads," Campbell said.
