Russell Means sues after losing Pine Ridge election
Friday, December 3, 2004
Activist/actor Russell Means has filed a lawsuit in federal court aimed at stopping Cecelia Fire Thunder from being sworn in as president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota.
Means ran for president but lost to Fire Thunder, who won 56 percent of the vote. Now he says Fire Thunder doesn't meet the requirements for candidacy because he says she lives off the reservation.
Fire Thunder, the first woman president of the tribe, is due to be sworn in on December 11.
