Gonzales to go before Senate Judiciary Committee

The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing today on Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General.
Gonzales, a former Texas Supreme Court justice, has served as White House counsel to President Bush since January 2001. He has been criticized for his role in shaping the war on terror, including legal memorandums appearing to justify torture of terror suspects.
If confirmed, Gonzales would be the first Hispanic to head the Department of Justice. He would replace John Ashcroft, who is resigning.
