Lumbee recognition bill introduced again

A bill to recognize the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has been re-introduced by Rep. Mike McIntyre (D).

McIntyre and Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R) tried to get the bill passed last year but faced opposition from some members of Congress and from the Eastern Band of Cherokees. The Cherokees, the only recognized tribe in North Carolina, say the Lumbees should go through the Bureau of Indian Affairs process.

The Lumbees are currently barred from the BIA due to a termination-era law still in effect. The Lumbees are the only tribe in this situation.
