UND asked to study 'Fighting Sioux' name again

The University of North Dakota is being asked again to study its "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

The request was made by an NCAA panel that is studying the use of Indian imagery. UND and 30 other schools -- including the Mississippi College "Choctaws" and the Southeastern Oklahoma State University "Savages" -- have until May 1 to respond.

Sioux tribes, Indian students and some faculty oppose the use of the "Fighting Sioux." They say it disrespects Sioux culture.

Non-Indian students and alumni support the name. They say it honors the Sioux Nation.
