Tribal budget advisory council backs tribal colleges

The Bureau of Indian Affairs Tribal Budget Advisory Council passed a resolution in support of funding for two tribal colleges cut by the Bush administration.

The council called for the restoration of funds to the Crownpoint Institute of Technology in New Mexico and United Tribes Technical College in North Dakota. Tribal leaders questioned the administration's priorities, noting additional funds were provided for tribal detention facilities.

"Apparently someone thinks that its more important to put our members in jail than to keep them in school," Ken Davis, chairman of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians of North Dakota was quoted as saying.
