Funding for Indian education in Montana slashed
Monday, March 14, 2005
A proposal fund Montana's Indian Education for All Act has been slashed from $23 million to $1.4 million over two years.
The Montana Indian Education Association and Montana's Indian lawmakers supported the $23 million request. They said it was necessary to finally implement the state constitution's requirement to teach about Indian history and culture, as recently confirmed by the state Supreme Court.
But as the Montana Legislature debated the issue, funding went down to $7.5 million over two years, then down to the $1.4 million figure.
