Hayworth predicts DeLay will weather ethics storm

Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-Arizona), the co-chair of the Congressional Native American Caucus and a long-time supporter of Indian issues, says embattled House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) will continue to enjoy support from Republican leaders.
"I imagine that he will come forward at the earliest opportunity to offer an accounting to the majority," Hayworth told The New York Times.
DeLay was admonished three times recently by the House ethics committee and his name has surfaced repeatedly in the Jack Abramoff/Michael Scanlon lobbying scandal. An overseas trip he took with Abramoff was funded by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and a gaming company, The Washington Post reported.
"Mr. DeLay may in fact be guilty of no wrongdoing, but his actions and those of his most ardent backers betray a cynical indifference to congressional ethics," The Miami Herald says in an editorial on DeLay's recent actions, including the removal of members from the ethics panel who criticized him.
"Mr. DeLay's actions deserve a thorough investigation and accounting before the public, particularly to determine whether the junket was related to the defeat of a House gambling-control bill two months later," The New York Times says in an editorial of the trip funded by tribal and gaming interests.
