BIA puts off decision on Si Tanka University

The Bureau of Indian Affairs needs more information before deciding whether to release federal funds to Si Tanka University in South Dakota.

The BIA has denied funds to the school because Native enrollment dropped below 50 percent. Si Tanka officials have been trying to get the BIA to reverse the decision and expected an answer yesterday. Instead, the agency asked for more documents.

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe says the Si Tanka campus in Huron, off the reservation, will close by April without additional funds. The campus in Eagle Butte, on the reservation, may be threatened as well.
