Recognition bills surface yet again in Congress
Thursday, March 17, 2005

Lawmakers from Connecticut have introduced three bills aimed at reforming the federal recognition process, The New London Day reports.

Sens. Christopher J. Dodd (D) and Joseph I. Lieberman (D) introduced the Tribal Recognition and Indian Bureau Enhancement Act. It would increase budget for federal recognition at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, codify the federal recognition criteria and allow more notice and comment by states and interested parties.

Rep. Rob Simmons (R) introduced another bill to bar former BIA officials from lobbying on behalf of petitioning groups for one year.
