Opinion: Above all, this is a tribal nation tragedy
Wednesday, March 23, 2005

"Just three days ago, I wrote an article for the St. Paul Pioneer Press about the need for good stories to be reported about our communities, in particular the need for the communities of color to publicize the good things that happen in their communities.

You can imagine my shock to see the tragic news unfold Monday afternoon. I sat like many other Minnesotans spellbound by the reports coming in from the Red Lake Nation and the Reservation school.

For me personally, it is strange to see this on television. Less then two weeks ago, I had the privilege of going to Red Lake and visiting this wonderful community. I drove down the streets that I now saw on the evening news. The American Indian community is small in numbers, so many of us have friends who either live in or come from Red Lake."
