Column: Red Lake people look out for each other
Thursday, March 31, 2005

"It's strange, he said, that at a time of so much sadness on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, what he'll always remember is the laughter.

This is to be the last day of business for Gene and Darlene Dillon's little cafe, the L & L, at the edge of this Red Lake community.

What's it like to have run a business at Red Lake?

'A few years ago, Darlene and I took a little vacation to Florida,' Dillon said. 'At 9 o'clock one night, my cell phone rings. It was one of the Joneses who lives just a ways from here.'

'He says to me, 'Where you guys at?' I tell him and he says, 'OK, just wanted you to know I've been checking the place. Everything looks fine.' That's one of those things about Native Americans. They look out for each other.'"
