National
Day proposed in honor of Ponca Chief Standing Bear

A resolution has been introduced in the Nebraska Legislature to mark May 12 as Chief Standing Bear Day.

The day falls on the anniversary of the May 12, 1879, court ruling won by the Ponca chief, who was one of several Poncas who were arrested for trying to return to Nebraska after being forced to go to Oklahoma. The court held that Indians had individual rights.

Standing Bear could be honored in another way if Gov. Dave Heineman (R) chooses an image of the chief for the state's quarter. A decision will come in May.
