County to challenge Cayuga Nation sovereignty
Thursday, April 14, 2005

A second county in New York says it will challenge the Cayuga Nation's sovereignty over the tribe's land claim area.

Officials in Seneca County say they will enforce their laws on the tribe's properties, including a gas station. The county is willing to go to court if the tribe doesn't cooperate, the chairman of the Seneca County Board of Supervisors said.

Cayuga County is also planning to assert authority over the tribe's land, citing the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Oneida Nation case. The decision said the Oneidas cannot "unilaterally" assert sovereignty over land that fell out of their possession 200 years ago.
