The Lincoln Journal Star ran a special multi-part report "Whiteclay: Standing at the Crossroads" to examine issues surrounding the sale of liquor in Whiteclay, Nebraska, and its effect on the nearby Pine Ridge Reservation.

Liquor is banned on the reservation but two miles away in Whiteclay, it's legal. Last year alone, liquor establishments in the town of just 22 people sold the equivalent of 4.5 million cans of beer, mostly to members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

The presence of alcohol has had a major impact on the reservation. The report looks at the effects on families, particularly young people. Tribal activists blame high rates of suicide, teen pregnancy and violence on alcohol abuse.

Efforts to turn the situation are occurring at many levels, the report says. Activists are seeking a greater law enforcement presence in Whiteclay. The Oglala Sioux Tribe is trying to curb drunk driving and other alcohol-related crimes. Others are turning to Lakota culture in hopes of renewing hope among young people, often called the Seventh Generation.

June 2005 marks six years since two more Lakota men were found dead near Whiteclay.
