County opposes Cayuga Nation on land-into-trust

Lawmakers in Cayuga County, New York, voted unanimously on Tuesday to oppose the Cayuga Nation's land-into-trust request.

The tribe has asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to hold its properties in trust as a result of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Oneida Nation case. The court said tribes can't claim immunity from taxes and other sovereign rights without going through the land-into-trust process.

The county opposes the request because it wants the tribe to pay property taxes.
