Judge won't protect Si Tanka's federal student aid
Tuesday, June 28, 2005

A federal judge won't stop the Department of Education from cutting off financial student aid to Si Tanka University in South Dakota.

Si Tanka asked for protection after being informed that it won't be allowed to participate in a number of student loan and grant programs. But the judge said federal law bars bankrupt schools from receiving the aid.

Si Tanka, chartered by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, filed for bankruptcy due to financial problems at its off-reservation campus, which has since closed. The on-reservation campus remains open.
