Tuesday, July 19, 2005
The former health director for the Kickapoo Tribe of Texas was sentenced to 15 years for stealing money from the tribe.
Last year, jury convicted Maricela Mendoza, 50, of money laundering and theft. She forged and cashed numerous tribal checks but said the money went for legitimate purposes.
Seven other people, including former Kickapoo chairman Raul Garza and his associates, face trial for stealing more than $900,000 from the tribe.
