Column: How about the Washington Blackfaces?
Friday, August 19, 2005

"Is it an insult or an honor to have a sports team, a military weapon or a school named after your ancestors? It's all in the way it's done.

A few Native Americans -- but not all -- have decided they don't like such references and have been pressing to remove what they call "harmful stereotypes" that foster "a racially hostile environment."

The prime target is the Redskins, Washington, D.C.'s, football team since 1937. Last month, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia reversed on a technicality a lower-court decision that held the nickname did not violate federal law prohibiting the registration of trademarks that "may disparage" any race, religion or group."
