CMU to cite support of tribe for 'Chippewas' nickname

Central Michigan University plans to appeal the inclusion of the school's "Chippewas" nickname in the new NCAA policy against Indian mascots.

The school says the nickname has the support of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe. According to The Morning Sun, the tribe has passed two resolutions since 1988 in favor of the "Chippewas."

The NCAA instituted a new policy that bars Indian imagery at post-season tournaments. Appeals are being allowed to take into account the views of "namesake" tribes for mascots or nicknames.
