Tribes set to oppose 'Fighting Sioux' nickname

Four tribes plan to pass resolutions in opposition to the "Fighting Sioux" nickname of the University of North Dakota.
The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, the Three Affiliated Tribes, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe will take up the issue, said Jay Taken Alive, a Standing Rock council member.
Taken Alive hopes to get the Spirit Lake Nation on board.
The opposition of the tribes could affect UND's appeal of the NCAA policy on Indian mascots.
The NCAA said it will consider the views of "namesake" tribes, as it did in exempting the Florida State University "Seminoles," a mascot supported by the Seminole Tribe.
