Tribal panel discusses future of 'Fighting Sioux' name

A panel at the United Tribes Intertribal Council summit in Bismarck, North Dakota, focused on the use of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo at the University of North Dakota.

Angela LaRocque, who earned a doctorate in clinical psychology at UND, presented the results of her research on mascots. She said Indian students who were shown the UND logo were "left depressed, angered, prone to violence and with no self-esteem," the Associated Press reported.

Jesse Taken Alive, a council member for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, said no other race of people is used as mascots. He said the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame can't be compared with Indian people because the leprechaun mascot is not real.

Leigh Jeanotte, the director of the university's American Indian student services, doesn't think the nickname will ever be changed. She said the battle has soured race relations at the school.

David Gipp, president of United Tribes Technical College and an alumnus of UND, believes "Sioux" will be eliminated in his lifetime. "We may have to have (UND) kicking and screaming into the 21st century, but we will do it," he said, the AP reported.
