Sen. Leahy announces vote for Roberts confirmation

Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on Wednesday that he will vote for the nomination of U.S. Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr.

Leahy's announcement came on the eve of the committee vote on Roberts. Six of the eight Democrats on the panel haven't said how they will vote.

Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nevada), the minority leader, and a handful of Democrats have said they will vote against Roberts for chief justice. They say he hasn't been forthcoming about his record as a government attorney and unsuccessfully sought more documents of his work.

Roberts is expected to win confirmation despite the Democratic opposition. Some Democrats plan to vote for Roberts when a vote is called sometime next week.
